Distinguished and Famous people from Maryborough
🏉 Kai Lohmann
Kai Lohmann grew up in Maryborough before reaching AFL premiership football. Central Goldfields Shire also identifies him as a former participant in Energy Breakthrough, the town’s school-based event exploring transport, design and energy. That gives his local story an appealing second dimension: a future elite footballer once took part in the practical teamwork of building and racing a school vehicle. Council highlighted his Maryborough upbringing when announcing a new partnership for the event in 2025. His biography links sporting achievement with a community occasion remembered by many people whose later lives followed very different paths.
🏉 Lauren Butler
Lauren Butler grew up in Maryborough and attended Ballarat Grammar before joining Collingwood in the AFL Women’s competition. Her playing pathway included the Greater Western Victoria Rebels, leading to selection in the 2018 national draft. The regional upbringing and school years preceded a professional sporting environment in Melbourne. Butler’s story adds women’s football to the town’s sporting connections, with a route through regional development programs rather than a sudden arrival at the highest level.
🏛️ Frank Rogan
Frank Rogan was born at Maryborough in 1915 and became both dux and athletics champion at its high school. A brief junior council job preceded teaching, military service and his return as the town’s clerk in 1948. He helped secure borrowing approval to provide Maryborough with sewerage, linking administration to a substantial improvement in everyday life. In 1955 he became Melbourne’s town clerk, chosen from nearly a hundred applicants. Maryborough’s connection joins birthplace, schooling and senior municipal work, supplying a practical foundation for a career spent defending local government’s responsibilities and improving its professional standing.
🏛️ Clive Stoneham
Clive Stoneham was born at Maryborough in 1909, attended its local schools and joined the Victorian Railways at fifteen. Council service and the mayoralty preceded a parliamentary career in which water conservation and regional development remained persistent concerns. He became Victoria’s Labor Opposition leader from 1958 to 1967, but kept a very local routine: constituents visited his Fraser Street verandah on Sundays. He continued living in the house where he had been born until declining health required care. Maryborough was therefore far more than an electoral label; it supplied his childhood, work, civic responsibilities and lifelong home.
